Your hair is perhaps your most noticeable trait, especially if you are a woman. While women spend lots of time and money treating their hair, there are many things that most of them don't know about their hair. Its is not just a beauty statement but can be a health barometer saying different things depending on its status. Once you know what your hair says about you, you will definitely pay more attention to it.

Dry hair that feels thin: Some of the most important factors that cause your hair to be dry include swimming in water loaded with chlorine, use of hair blowers and driers. However, what should worry you most is the fact that it could be an indication of a thyroid gland that is under performing. If you have other related symptoms such as weight gain, fatigue and feel cold all the time, you may want to have your doctor check your thyroid and begin proper treatment.

Crusty or scaly patches of hair: If you realize you have some crust forming on your scalp you are most likely suffering from psoriasis. Unlike dandruff, this creates a thick scabby like surface on the scalp. Psoriasis is likely to occur with other diseases like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis. Your doctor will know how to treat whatever condition that could be accompanying the problem.

Thinning hair: When you experience your hair falling in large locks you are likely to be undergoing some psychological stress. This is most likely to occur when there is a stressor in your life such as loss of job, divorce or any other problem. A big loss can also occur when you have an infection fever or even diabetes in its earlier stages. You will need to see a dermatologist who will tell you whether such a loss is temporary or permanent and go on to advice you on the correct course of action.

Hair loss tending towards baldness: This is a condition that affects both men and women and can be caused by a sudden change in you sex hormone patterns. However, there are diseases that could be the underlying cause that creates a hormonal imbalance. Men will almost always lose hair following their hairline, followed by the temples and the back. Women on the other hand will follow a similar pattern but it is likely to affect the entire head. This kind of hair loss is sometimes a side effect of drugs taken to deal with some chronic diseases. You may want to ask your doctor to discover the cause and where possible look for an alternative to the drug.
